Turner, a former Allatoona student, sadly lost a hard-fought battle against cancer in 2018. While at Allatoona, Turner was a superior athlete and a scholar. But, he was possibly most well known and loved for the amazing smile that was always on his face and lighting up the classroom or sports field.
This infectious, bright attitude earned him the nickname, Sunshine. It is our hope that proceeds from the Turner Cockrell Lacrosse Classic will continue to shine the same light that Turner did by supporting the scholarship in his name and the good works of Turner’s Heroes.
The Turner J. Cockrell Scholar-Athlete Award is given each year to a senior graduating from Allatoona. Qualified candidates will have a minimum GPA of 3.5 while participating in sports during their high school career. Recipients will use the award toward college education expenses. Students can log in to Naviance and go to Document Resources for more information and apply.
Turner’s Heroes believes every patient is a superhero, they just provide the capes. Through their connections with children’s hospitals around the country, and with your support from events like the TCLC, they are able to make sure patients are supported.
This support is provided through superhero-themed events at the hospital and by facilitating engagement between patients and their communities. Events support patients while also working toward a cure for pediatric cancer by funding Discovery Grants. For more information on the great work of Turner’s Heroes go to turnersheroes.org.
