The impact of COVID-19 caused an abrupt end to the 2020 season and it has already started to make an impact on the 2021 season. Several states announced a postponement of their fall sports seasons, which caused the start of the 2021 lacrosse season to move.
Below is the list of states that have moved their lacrosse dates. This list will be updated as needed.
Fall sports in California have been moved to January and scheduled to end in mid-to-late April. Spring sports are expected to begin in April and run until June. The CIF Southern Section championship final is now scheduled for June 12, 2021. In previous seasons, the last games in California are in May.
District of Columbia
The DC State Athletic Association announced that it is postponing all fall sports. The plan is to have sports return in January. The Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC), in which defending champion Gonzaga (D.C.), along with DeMatha (Md.), Paul VI (Va.), St. John’s College (D.C.), Good Counsel (Md.), St. Mary’s Ryken (Md.), Bishop O’Connell (Va.), Bishop Ireton (Va.) and others are members, has canceled fall athletics. According to the press release, they are exploring options with a Jan. 1, 2021 start date. No information as to how
Lacrosse in Illinois will now be played May 3 to June 26 after football gets pushed to spring. The season was scheduled to start on March 1 in 2021.
While lacrosse is not sanctioned in Nevada, the governing body is following the guidelines of the NIAA, which pushes the start of the season to April 3, 2021. The first games can be played on April 16 and the last game is May 22.
The Oregon High School Lacrosse Association (OHSLA) will follow the timeline set by the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA), which will delay the start of their 2021 season.
At this point the OHSLA plans to mirror the OSAA's timeline for Spring Sports for the High School Programs with a practice start date of April 19th 2021. Games start date of May 3rd 2021 and culmination of the Spring Season the last week of June 2021.
Oregon's 2020 season never got started, but games were scheduled to start the first week in April.
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association announced Wednesday afternoon that it is moving the high school football season to February. The lacrosse season is now scheduled to begin Jan. 11 and end March 12. The first games can be played on Jan. 25. The season is limited to 14 games and two games per week. Lacrosse generally begins in North Carolina towards the end of February/early March.
Lacrosse start date pushed back to April 12 and will run through June 26. Last year the first games could be played on March 15.
Washington’s start date has moved to the end of April.
