Washington Season Delayed Due to Coronavirus
Precautions related to the Coronavirus in Washington are likely to cause games to be postponed or canceled altogether. According to the WHSBLA, several schools and/or city parks on the Eastside of greater Seattle have closed facilities and canceled all after school events until after March 20.
At this time, most schools are still open, though some districts have moved to an online learning system and keeping students at home for a few weeks.
The high school lacrosse season began in Washington on March 2. According to the WHSBLA, each district has released different statements, but essentially most teams are allowed to practice. The hangup is that some programs practice on city-controlled fields that have been shut down, leaving them with nowhere to practice.
Some districts have imposed no out-of-state travel restrictions, which could force the cancellation of spring break trips. It has the potential of impacting out-of-state programs that were scheduled to fly into the area for games.
Among the teams that have out-of-state games on the schedule is Mercer Island (Wash.), which has its annual East Coast trip from April 6 to April 10. The Islanders also have a March 21 game against Jesuit Portland (Ore.) in addition to Heritage (Colo.) and Yorktown (N.Y.) scheduled on March 25 and 27 respectively. Bellevue (Wash.) is scheduled to play several Nevada teams in mid-April.
The WHSBLA said the situation is ongoing and there is much to be determined over the next week.
The Seattle Times reported on Friday that 14 people in the state have died from the disease.
