Wando (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) did something no boys’ lacrosse team from South Carolina has done before.
With the 19–9 win over Nation Ford (S.C.) in the state championship game, the Warriors became the the boys program in state history to win three consecutive titles.
“We are certainly proud of the tradition that we have created here, and it was important to this team to do something that had never been done,” Wando coach Lance Renes told the Post and Courier. “To be the first champion in AAAAA is really special, and to win three in a row with this group of seniors was something they wanted to do.”
Logan Mitchell scored six goals while senior Sam Weis scored four in the victory. Wando has won five titles in the last six seasons.
St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) won its second-straight championship with a 12–7 victory over Lake Highland Prep (Orlando, Fla.) on April 29. The win was the Raiders 38th straight against in-state competition.
Senior Jimmy Harrington scored three goals and fellow senior Kevin Crowley, who earned LaxRecords.com Player of the Week, scored two with one assist in the victory.
“We’ve been working for this whole season. Earlier in my high school career we were just happy to be there. I’ve lost twice in the Final Four so that pushed me to not just be happy to just be there,” Crowley said. “We knew that were the team everyone wanted to take down. We knew everyone was going to play their best game against us. We loved that. We fed off that. We wanted to outwork everyone.”
