Fairfield Prep (Fairfield, Connecticut) head coach Chris Smalkais announced his retirement, according to an article on Fairfield Prep’s website.
The 29-year head coach is among the nation’s all-time leaders in wins. He is fourth among all known Connecticut head coaches. He trails only Howard Benedict (551), Jeff Brameier (549), and Guy Whitten (410) for the most wins in the Constitution State.
Smalkais entered the 400 win club this season and finished with 404 career victories.
After six state championships, Chris Smalkais said Monday he has retired as Fairfield Prep lacrosse coach. In the aftermath of the Jesuits’ CIAC Class L semifinal loss to Simsbury in June, the state lacrosse hall-of-famer had said he planned to return, but he changed his mind in the meantime.
If my son had a game Wednesday in Schenectady, N.Y., for Union College, and on Saturday we were playing Chaminade, and if Chaminade was playing St. Anthony’s on Wednesday, guess where I’d go? I didn’t want to make that choice. Source: Smalkais retires from Fairfield Prep lacrosse – Connecticut Post
Smalkais started coaching at Fairfield Prep in 1987 and in addition to his 404 wins, he won six CIAC Class L State Championships and 12 Southern Connecticut Conference Championships.
