The Lacrosse History of the Boys’ Latin School of Maryland is the most comprehensive book about one of the most prestigious programs, in arguably the toughest high school lacrosse league in the nation.
The book, researched and compiled by Boys’ Latin Alumni Director Mac Kennedy, is a meticulously researched work about the history of the private school’s lacrosse program. Established in 1844, the Boys’ Latin School of Maryland has played interscholastic lacrosse team since 1929.
Kennedy began his research 11 years ago, before he worked at the private school.
“I just did a little bit at a time and the next thing you know it snowballed,” Kennedy said. “My whole family is BL, my father went here, my brothers played on the varsity. I wanted to know about the old days and soon the old days became not so old.”
Kennedy started researching the 1940s, when his father attended the school and played on the varsity. After researching that decade, Kennedy decided to start from the beginning.
“I thought I should do everything, so I went back to Day 1, and low-and-behold 85 years of lacrosse later, here I am,” Kennedy said.
The book covers the beginning of the program, it’s time in the MSA and into the current MIAA A Conference. There are year-by-year recaps with coaching and player information. There is no part of the program left untouched.
“The hard part was going through microfiche at the library and going through old newspapers,” Kennedy said. “You never knew when a game was played. You had to go through the newspaper and maybe it wasn’t reported the day of the game. Maybe it was two days later. I talked to a lot of old alumni. It very soon became a labor of love.”
“When I started, I thought it’d be good to have all the data. This was before I started working here,” Kennedy added. “Once I got the job as Alumni Director, I thought maybe it was a good idea to put something down.”
That labor of love is now available to the world as an e-book for $16.95. It is 496 pages and can be downloaded to your computer, tablet or phone. It is available at Gumroad.com.
*Editors Note: Kennedy has been a tremendous help to LaxRecords.com and has helped provide much of the information on Boys’ Latin coaching history in addition to helping me research the MSA/MIAA champions.
